Real wood, not a look-alike

Solid hardwood is a full 3/4" plank of actual wood, top to bottom - not a veneer, not a printed layer. It's the floor that gets handed down: sanded and refinished five to seven times over its life, which is part of why it still shows up in the century-old homes around the downtown Denton square, decades after the original installation.

Flooring and Stone of Denton sells and installs solid hardwood from Mohawk and Mannington in every species, grain, and finish those mills offer, and because Guadalupe Martinez spent 30 years as a master tile installer before co-founding this company, the standard for a flat, fully-prepped subfloor before a single board goes down is non-negotiable.

Where solid hardwood makes the most sense

Solid hardwood nails into a wood subfloor, which makes it the right call on older pier-and-beam homes near the square and on the upper levels of two-story homes throughout Denton County. It's a tougher fit over a concrete slab - for those homes, most of our clients end up on [engineered hardwood](/engineered-hardwood) instead, which handles slab movement and humidity swings without the same restrictions. Species, stain, and finish

Red and white oak are the most popular choice - durable, take stain evenly, and easy to match years down the road. Hickory is the hardest domestic species and holds up well with kids and dogs; maple gives a cleaner, quieter grain; walnut brings a darker, more formal tone into a dining room or study. Every stain is sampled on your actual wood species, in your own lighting, before we order material.

We also finish unstained solid hardwood to a custom color on-site, and can [repair or spot-replace](/floor-repair) existing solid hardwood instead of a full tear-out if the boards themselves are still in good shape.

Custom installation patterns

Beyond a standard straight-lay, we install random-width, diagonal, herringbone, chevron, basket weave, and custom medallion patterns, and we can carry the same pattern up a staircase - see [hardwood stairs](/hardwood-stairs) for what that looks like. Every solid hardwood project is nailed or glued to manufacturer spec, whether it's a single room or a full custom build.

Real & Solid Hardwood Flooring - frequently asked questions

Installed and cared for properly, 50 to 100+ years is normal, with 5-7 refinishings along the way. It's one of the only flooring types that routinely outlasts a mortgage.

Not directly - it needs to nail into wood. Over a slab we either build a plywood deck first or recommend engineered hardwood, which is built for exactly that situation.

Prefinished planks are sealed at the mill, which means a faster install with a slight bevel between boards. Site-finished is sanded and coated in your home for a perfectly flat, fully custom-color floor.

It moves more than engineered hardwood through our humid summers and dry winters, so we spec narrower widths and proper expansion gaps, and always let the material acclimate in your home before installing.
