Real wood that handles what solid hardwood can't

Engineered hardwood is a real wood wear layer bonded to a dimensionally stable plywood core. It looks and feels like solid hardwood underfoot, but it won't cup, gap, or buckle the way solid wood can when the ground underneath a house moves - which is exactly what the expansive Blackland Prairie clay under most of Denton County does, season to season.

Flooring and Stone of Denton stocks engineered hardwood from Mohawk and Mannington, and we've installed it across everything from new construction in Argyle and Corinth to older homes retrofitted with a concrete addition. Why it's the right call for most newer Denton County homes

Most production homes built in Denton County over the last 15 years sit on a concrete slab, and that's engineered hardwood's home turf.

  • Stable over concrete slabs where solid hardwood can't be nailed down directly
  • Holds up through humid summers and dry winters better than solid wood does
  • Available in wider planks (up to 7"-9") that solid construction can't offer
  • Factory-finished with a durable topcoat, so it's ready to walk on the day it's installed
  • Floating, glue-down, or nail-down - whichever your subfloor calls for

Species, widths, and finish options

Most of what we install is European or American oak, though maple, walnut, and hickory are available for a different look. Plank widths run from a traditional 3" up to wide 7"-9" boards, and finishes range from a clean matte to wire-brushed, hand-scraped, and reactive-stained European looks. If you'd rather compare it directly against [solid hardwood](/real-solid-hardwood-flooring) for your specific room, that's exactly what a free in-home estimate is for.

Installation, matched to your subfloor

Our crew checks the subfloor before recommending an installation method - moisture testing on slab, flatness checks everywhere, joist inspection where relevant - and installs floating, glue-down, or nail-down based on what will actually hold up. Every quote includes baseboard removal and reinstall, transitions between rooms, and full removal of your old flooring. Engineered Hardwood - frequently asked questions

If the wear layer is 3mm or thicker, yes, once or twice over its life. Thinner wear layers (1-2mm) do better with a screen-and-recoat than a full sand.

For a Denton County slab foundation, yes - the plywood core resists the expansion and contraction that clay-soil movement and humidity swings cause in solid wood.

Floating installs faster and repairs easily. Glue-down feels more solid underfoot and handles a concrete slab a little better. We'll recommend one based on your specific subfloor.

Water-resistant, not waterproof. It shrugs off normal spills far better than solid wood, but standing water from an appliance leak should still be dealt with right away. For a truly waterproof option, take a look at [vinyl flooring](/vinyl-flooring).

Yes, through Synchrony and Lendvious - see the [financing](/financing) page or ask during your in-home visit.
