The staircase everyone sees first

Stairs take more daily wear than almost any other surface in a house, and they're usually the first thing a guest notices walking in. Flooring and Stone of Denton designs and installs hardwood staircases across Denton County - from new two-story builds in Argyle and Corinth to older homes near the square getting their carpeted stairs replaced for the first time in decades. [Book a free in-home estimate](/free-estimate) and we'll measure the staircase in person.

We handle the whole job in one visit: removing the old treads or carpet, leveling the substructure, milling nosings to match your existing hardwood, and finishing everything with a low-VOC sealer. One crew, one schedule, one warranty.

Solid or engineered treads

Solid oak, maple, or hickory treads are the standard choice for a staircase and can be sanded and refinished multiple times over the life of the stairs.

Engineered treads make more sense when you're matching an existing engineered floor, or when the staircase sits over a concrete slab. They're dimensionally stable, less prone to squeaks, and finish identically to solid wood once installed.

  • Red oak, white oak, maple, and hickory treads, in stock
  • Custom stain color-matched to your existing hardwood floor using free sample boards
  • Open-end, boxed, curved, and winding staircases
  • Matching nosings milled in-house when the manufacturer doesn't carry one

How the installation goes

Day one is demo and prep - removing old treads or carpet, vacuuming out the staircase, shimming any loose stringers so nothing squeaks once the new stairs go in. Day two is installing treads, risers, and nosings with construction adhesive and finish nails, no visible fasteners. Day three is finishing - stain if you want a color, three coats of polyurethane, and a final detail pass before you're back to using them.

How the installation goes

Matching your stairs to the rest of the house

Most homeowners want the staircase to read as one continuous floor with the rest of the house, not a separate project bolted on. We work from the same stain batch as your [hardwood flooring](/hardwood-flooring) so the finish matches board for board, and if you'd rather have a deliberate contrast - dark treads with painted risers, for example - we'll mock that up on a sample board before ordering material. If you're carpeting the stairs instead, [carpet stairs](/carpet-stairs) covers that option too.

Hardwood Stairs - frequently asked questions

Yes. We remove the carpet, padding, staples, and tack strip, then inspect the treads underneath. Solid treads in good shape can usually take the new hardwood directly; particleboard or damaged treads get replaced first.

A standard 14-stair job usually runs 2 to 3 days - demo, install, and finishing. You can use the stairs the next morning, with a full cure around a week later.

That's the goal. We bring stain samples to your home and brush them onto the same wood species before you commit, so you're seeing the real color on the real wood, not a swatch in a book.

No more than any other hard surface finished properly. We use a matte or satin polyurethane with a low-slip profile, and can add discreet anti-slip strips under the nosing for households with kids or pets.
